WhatsApp, Telegram, and Snapchat can leak your IP address, do this to avoid it
Popular social media apps use a P2P system for calls which means that your IP address can be known by the other person during the call. Understand here how and in what ways you can be saved.
Crores of people today depend on other social media apps like whatsapp, Snapchat, and Telegram for calls and chats. Through these, a person today sends information from one place to another. social media apps have now become a part of our lives and we spend hours in them every day. Although these apps have become an important part of our lives, these apps also disturb our privacy. Actually, during a call, the other person can know your location through an IP address. Popular social media apps whatsapp, Telegram, Messenger, FaceTime, Snapchat, etc. can provide your IP address to the other person if you have kept this feature on. Know about this.
Such social media apps use peer-to-peer connections for calling
Peer-to-peer or p2p connection is private, which means that the call is between you and the other person and only both of you can hear each other. No server is involved during calling, which provides a better calling experience. However, one risk with a P2P call connection is that it can reveal your IP address to another person. The other user can find out your IP address by applying a little intelligence, through which your location can be known in a way. IP address does not tell the exact location but it tells the user about a geographical area.
These things should be kept in mind
Never accept calls from unknown numbers and if you receive such a call, block it immediately. If you do not want your IP address to be known to the other person, then disable the p2p connection and use a server. Although the call quality was reduced slightly by using the server, your safety remains intact.
How to turn off P2P
In Telegram, you can disable peer-to-peer connections by going to the Privacy and Security option in Settings and then going to Calls. Like Telegram, whatsapp is also working on a new feature to keep your IP address safe during calls, which will go live soon. We have also written an article on this topic on our website. You can check that also. Currently, this type of feature is not available in Messenger and Snapchat.
