Google Pauses Enforcement of In-App Billing Policy...


Google on november 1 said that it has banned the implementation of its in-app billing system in india following the recent decision of the Competition Commission of india (CCI). App developers were earlier expected to comply with the Play billing policy by 31 october 2022.

On october 25, CCI asked the tech giant to revise the company's app payment policies, in addition to a series of measures to allow app developers to purchase apps or use any third party billing or payment processing services for in-app billing on google Play. 

It has also imposed a fine of Rs 936.44 crore on google for abusing its dominant position with respect to its Play Store policies. The internet giant said it is evaluating the next steps, while noting that the model has "driven India's wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW">digital transformation" and expanded reach to "hundreds of millions of Indians".

On october 20, it had fined the Android maker Rs 1,337.76 crore for abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem, besides directing google to revise its conduct with corrective measures. 

The company said in a support page that "Following the recent decision of the CCI, we are suspending the enforcement of a requirement for developers to use google Play's billing system to purchase wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW">digital goods and services for transactions by users in India." While we review our legal options and make sure we can continue to invest in Android and Play."

The policy has already been made mandatory for in-app wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW">digital content purchases for users outside India.
