Vedanta ties up with Foxconn to make semiconductors!!!

Vedanta Group, the owner of Kudankulam Sterlite plant, plans to invest $ 8.4 billion in chip manufacturing division with high-tech firm Foxconn. Vedanta to invest $ 8.4 billion in india to build semiconductors with Foxconn.

Anil Agarwal's Vedanta Group plans to invest $ 8.4 billion in chip manufacturing division with high-tech firm Foxconn. The company has already applied for the government's PLI incentive scheme and will start production by 2024.

Akarsh Hebbar, global managing director for Vedanta Group's Performance and Semiconductor Business, said the company will target 28 nanometers (NM) of FAB and 70-80% of the domestic market for smartphones and electronics, with the rest being exported. However, he said Foxconn had no prior production experience in semiconductors.

He says working with Foxconn would be optimal for a company that has a global track record in electronics manufacturing.

The total project cost for 28 nanometers is about $ 7- $ 8 billion, Hebbar said and they planned to operate the plant by 2024. Foxconn is investing about $ 118 - $ 120 million.

Vedanta said it would like to invest $ 15 billion in a phase-wise combination of debt and equity, including about $ 5 billion for semiconductors and $ 10 billion for displays. With 28 nm chips, Vedanta focuses on the mobile phone and consumer electronics segment, but eventually, it enters automobiles that rely on technology at 28 nm or less.

Vedanta, which wants to sell 70-80% domestically, expects exports to be around 20% depending on the price cycle. It is noteworthy that permission has not yet been obtained from the government.
