The Holika Dahan ceremonies will be performed a bit later in the evening on Sunday, march 24, 2024, which is also the first day of holi this year. The history of the festival of Colours dates back many centuries, and it is even mentioned in numerous ancient writings and religions.

Holika Dahan's past

The narrative of the demon king Hiranyakashyap and his son Prahlada, which is mentioned in the vishnu and Bhagavata Puras, is the origin of the Holika Dahan celebration in Hindu mythology. Lord Brahma bestowed a blessing onto Hiranyakashipu, a formidable and despotic demon, shielding him from death. Believing he could not be slain, he grew haughty and commanded all the people in his kingdom to worship him alone as a god. Hiranyakashipu was infuriated when his son Prahlada, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, disobeyed his father's orders. He tried poisoning, pushing him over cliffs, and setting him on fire, among other methods, to murder his own son. But every time, Prahlada came out safe because of Vishnu's heavenly guardianship.

The narrative of Holika Dahan is connected to the incident in which Hiranyakashipu killed his son with the help of his sister Holika. Holika was shielded from the flames by her protective cloak. She sat on a blazing pyre with her nephew, and to everyone's surprise, Prahlad was spared from Hiranyakashipu's subsequent effort to kill him, while Holika was reduced to ashes.
