Traditional wear Dhoti is considered as ‘national attire’ in Tamil Nadu and Kerala states especially. Recently, A sitting judge of Madras Court has wore a Dhoti to attend an event in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association club at Cheapuk. He was denied entry into the TNCA club by the security out there. When justice D Hariparanthaman alighted from his red beacon-flashing official car at the club premises to participate in a book release function organized by a former High Court judge, though the judge pleaded with the security staff of the club that the dress code is only for its members and not for the guests, they simply didn’t allow him to enter. When the judge was barred from entering the TNCA club for wearing a Dhoti, it has triggered a debate in the state, calling for stringent action against the clubs. So Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday introduced a bill in the State Assembly. The bill says whoever denies entry of persons wearing dhotis in any public place, malls, clubs and stadiums will be imposed a one-year jail term and Rs.25, 000 fines. The act will also be applicable to other traditional Indian dresses. The act, 2014 which is entry of Traditional dress into public places is passed by voice vote. At that time when the judge wasn’t allowed to enter into the club just because he was wearing Dhoti. In its operative portion Bill said “No person, wearing a Veshti(Dhoti) reflecting Tamil culture or any other Indian traditional dress, shall be denied entry into any public place, by reason that the dress shall be worn in a decent manner”.
