Warning.. Gangs stealing money through AI voice cloning.. How to escape fraud?

Cybercrime police have warned of an increasing number of fake money-stealing scams using AI voice cloning. As technology has grown exponentially, so has cyber crime. Online scams are also on the rise. Cybercriminals are using various innovative methods to steal money. In that way, artificial intelligence technology known as AI is being used for fraud. They clone the voices of trusted people like family members and make emergency calls to extort money. That is, through AI technology, they are talking like family members and deceiving them.Mr. Sanjaykumar IPS, ATGP, Cyber Crime Division spoke about this, “These callers may pretend to be a person known to the victim such as a family member or friend, and claim that there is an emergency or threat and that they need urgent financial assistance. They may cry or speak in a pleading tone, saying they are in dire straits that require immediate help. These cybercriminals are also said to be using sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) software to clone the impersonator's voice. They get the impersonator's voice sample by using their social media post/videos or speaking as a fake call via phone. This technology allows us to reliably replicate the voice, intuition and emotional nuances of a victim's authentic communication. The fraudster demands immediate money transfer to the victim. They recommend using fast and convenient payment methods like Unified Payments Interdata-face (UPI) to speed up the transaction.

Out of concern and eagerness to help a loved one, the victim may comply with the scammer's demands without verifying the caller's credibility. Once this transfer is completed, they may feel cheated when trying to contact their family member or friend,” he said.He also talked about how to escape from this scam. Speaking about this, “Always check the identity of the person calling you, especially if they are asking for urgent financial assistance.

Ask probing questions. Contact the caller from a known, verified number to confirm their identity before taking any action.Stay aware of common scams, including voice cloning scams. Learn to recognize the warning signs. Be aware of unexpected requests for money. Use secure communication channels such as encrypted messaging apps or video calls to verify the identity of callers before engaging in important conversations or transactions. Be cautious when receiving phone calls or messages from unknown numbers, especially if they include requests for personal or financial information. Trust your instincts and don't hesitate to check the legitimacy of the communication. If you are a victim of similar fraudulent activity or come across any suspicious activity, dial Cybercrime tollfree helpline number 1930 and report the incident or register a complaint at https://cybercrime.gov.in.” He said.
