Center spent crores, yet why are 83% of youth unemployed?

Amidst the election atmosphere in india, all the parties have promised to employ the youth in their respective manifestos. During the campaign for the last lok sabha elections, the bharatiya janata party had also made many promises of providing jobs to the people, not only this, the central government had also started many schemes to promote skills among the youth. But, despite this, according to a report by the international Labor Organization (ILO) in 2024, currently about 83% of the youth in india are unemployed.

In such a situation, a question arises as to why unemployment is not decreasing in the country despite all the schemes and efforts. How much has the central government spent on these schemes to teach skills to the people?

Skill india Mission is one of the schemes to make the youth employable. This mission was started in the year 2015. Recently, in response to a question asked in the rajya sabha, minister of State in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rajiv Chandrashekhar had said that in the last five years, Rs 15,192 crore has been allocated in india under the Skill india Mission. Apart from this, according to rajya sabha data, Rs 91 lakh has been allocated in the last five years to train people under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana and Rs 14 lakh under the Jan Shikshan Sansthan Yojana.

So are such schemes proving helpful?

According to the rajya sabha report, youth learning skills under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana can get jobs with higher salaries as compared to other schemes. Among the youth who have been a part of all these government schemes, about 76 percent of the candidates admitted that after training, they have more employment opportunities than before.
