Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde on wednesday got a new nameplate installed outside his office chamber at the state secretariat in south Mumbai, which now bears his mother's name before that of his father. In the new name plate of the chief minister, his name is now written as 'Eknath Gangubai Sambhaji Shinde'.

The change in the chief minister's nameplate has been made in accordance with the recent decision of the state cabinet, according to which all children born on or after May 1, 2024, will have their mother's name along with their name in all government documents like Aadhaar or PAN card. "The state cabinet has decided to implement women and Child Development minister Aditi Tatkare's historic proposal to include the mother's name in official documents and the chief minister is marking the beginning by implementing it himself," the Chief Minister's office said in a statement. "Like the father, the mother of the child also plays an important role in the upbringing of the child and the government believes that she should be given due recognition," the statement said. Apart from Deputy chief minister and senior bharatiya janata party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis, nationalist congress party (NCP) President and Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has also symbolically changed the nameplate of his office, which mentions his mother's name. . Fadnavis's nameplate now reads 'Devendra Sarita Gangadharrao Fadnavis' while Pawar's name is written as 'Ajit Ashatai Anantrao Pawar'.

Let us tell you here, just a few days ago, cm Eknath Shinde has decided that from now onwards mother's name along with father's name will be mandatory in the documents. Only after this, cm Shinde changed the name plate outside his office and added his mother's name to his name.
