The Manipur high court has ordered to remove that paragraph of the judgment given in march 2023 in which the state government was asked to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. The court said that this paragraph is contrary to the stand taken by the Constitution Bench of the supreme court in this matter. The instructions given by the high court on march 27, 2023 are considered to be a catalyst for ethnic conflict in the state. More than 200 people have lost their lives in this conflict.

Request was made to remove the paragraph

A single bench of Justice Golmei Gafulshilu struck down the said portion while hearing a review petition on wednesday (February 21). In last year's decision, a request was made to delete the controversial paragraph directing the state government to expeditiously consider including the Meitei community in the st list. The para of last year's decision stated that the State government shall 'expeditely, if possible, consider the request of the petitioners for inclusion of the Meitei/Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list within a period of four weeks' from the date of receipt of the order. What did the judge say?

Justice Gafulshilu, in the february 21 judgment, stressed the need to remove the said directive by pointing to the procedure laid down by the government of india for amending the Scheduled Tribe list. Justice Gafulshilu said, “Accordingly, the direction given in para no. 17(iii) needs to be deleted and order is accordingly made to delete para no. 17(iii) of the judgment and order dated march 27, 2023.” ..''
