At present he is a Legislative Councilor and National General Secretary of JDU. He is considered to have played an important role in making the alliance with BJP. He has previously been in BJP. Six rajya sabha seats from bihar are falling vacant in April. Two MLAs from RJD, two from JDU, one from bjp and one from congress are retiring.
