Padma Shri to First Female Elephant Mahout!!!


President Droupadi Murmu will present the Padma Award winners at the civil investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, which is typically conducted in march or april each year. The Center revealed the list of recipients on Thursday. The president has authorized 132 Padma Awards for this year, two of which are for pairs of cases. 110 padma shri Awards, 17 Padma bhushan Awards, and 5 Padma Vibhushan Awards will be given out. Among the 34 unsung heroes padma shri honorees for 2024 are the first female elephant mahout in India, a burn sufferer turned surgeon, a sculpture artist, a tribal welfare worker, a medicine practitioner, practitioners of traditional dance forms, and an experienced coach of a traditional indian sport.

Among the awardees of the padma shri are these:

This Republic Day, Parbati Barua, India's first female elephant mahout and an animal conservationist from Assam, is among the recipients of awards. Born as the last of the Rajahs of Gauripur, Barua is 70 years old. After the BBC produced the documentary "Queen of the Elephants," which was based on her life, she gained notoriety. In the category of social service, she received the padma shri (animal welfare).

Her dedication to reducing conflict between humans and elephants made her stand out. Her unwavering efforts over the course of forty years were instrumental in both saving and influencing the lives of several rogue tuskers. She came from a wealthy family, but she made the decision to live simply and devote her life to helping tuskers.

Prema Dhanraj, a social worker and plastic reconstructive surgeon, 72, is another beneficiary. He was eight years old when he suffered 50% burn damage in a fire accident that he survived as a child. dhanraj went on to become one of the best plastic surgeons in India, specializing in the treatment and recuperation of burn patients. In the area of medicine, he will be awarded the padma shri for Indigenous Burns. 

Kumartuli artisan Sanatan Rudra Pal is renowned for being one of the most well-known sculptors of imposing and majestic Durgas idols. He has more than 50 years of experience as a sculptor. Every year during Durga Puja, his artwork travels from kolkata to far-off places like the Caribbean Islands, Washington, and Johannesburg, ending in London. This year, he too received the Padma Shri.
