After 35 years for the first time in the history of tennis, Indian player Sumit Nagal!

After 35 years in the history of tennis, sumit Nagal became the first indian player to defeat a ranked player in a Grand Slam tournament.

The Australian Open tennis 2024 series is being held at melbourne Park in australia from last 14th. This is the first Grand Slam series of the year. The series will continue till the 18th. In this, sumit Nagal participated in the men's singles category on behalf of India.


In this, he data-faced the 31st ranked Alexander Public in the first round. In this round, sumit Nagal advanced to the 2nd round after defeating him 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 [7-5]. In this, sumit Nagal became the first indian player to defeat a ranked A seeded player after 35 years.


Nagal's second round qualification is one of the most memorable achievements in tennis history for Indians. When it comes to men's singles, the third round is the furthest any indian tennis player has reached at the Australian Open.


Earlier the legendary Ramesh Krishnan qualified for the 3rd round of the Australian Open tennis a total of 5 times in his career. He qualified for the 3rd round in 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988 and 1989. The last time he reached the 3rd round was in the 1989 Australian Open where he defeated world number 1 Mats Wilander in the 2nd round.


It was at this stage, after 35 years, that sumit Nagal advanced to the 3rd round by defeating an A-seeded player in the 2nd round. Vijay Amritraj is another indian who has made it past the first round of the Australian Open. He reached the second round of the 1984 Australian Open, while leander paes reached the second round on several occasions in 1997 and 2000.



In terms of recent indian tennis history, it is noteworthy that retired Somdev Devvarman managed to qualify for the second round of the 2013 Australian Open.
