Notably, it was the first warship to be named after the northeastern city of Imphal. The approval was given by the President on 16 april 2019. The name indicates the importance of the national security, sovereignty and prosperity of the North Eastern region. Imphal was handed over to the indian Navy on 20 october 2023 after completing a rigorous and extensive trial program in port and at sea. Subsequently, the ship successfully test-fired the extended-range supersonic Brahmos missile in november 2023.

This is a first for any indigenous warship. The ship has thereby demonstrated the Navy's commitment and confidence in its combat effectiveness and its sophisticated indigenous weapons and platforms.

Following this milestone achievement, the ship's emblem was inaugurated on 28 november 2023 in delhi by the Defense minister in the presence of the chief minister of Manipur and other senior dignitaries. INS Once Imphal is launched, the Western Fleet will be attached to the command.

Designed by the Naval Design Wing of the indian Navy, Imphal is a state-of-the-art warship developed by MDL with significant contributions from the public and private sectors, including MSMEs and the Defense Research and Development Organisation. The warship 'INS Imphal' is 164 meters long. The vessel has a carrying capacity of 7,400 tonnes and can travel at a speed of more than 56 kmph.

The ship is equipped with Bramos missiles that can attack and destroy targets on the ground, missiles that can attack and destroy targets in the air from the ground, and indigenous devices that launch rockets to attack submarines. Modern surveillance radars are also installed on board. This ship has been built in such a way that it can fight against all 3 types of attacks - nuclear, biological and chemical.
