Telangana Hyderabad - Total rehabilitation of Kaddam project on the cards
The project's spillways are a crucial part of the restoration plan. The spillways' complete rehabilitation as a proposal is being taken into consideration. About 600 crore rupees would be spent on the spillways component alone, while roughly 100 crore rupees would likely be spent on the restoration of other buildings, such as the crest gates.
The crest gates will be taken care of in the first phase, and the irrigation assistance for the ayacut will continue. The counterweight method used to control the crest gates is no longer necessary. Since the technology was developed in russia and Germany, only those two nations had long used it. However, they had also ceased utilizing it.
As part of the initial phase of the restoration process, the counterweights of the crest gates would be taken out. The 18 crest gates—9 of indian technology and 9 of German technology—would all be serviced using various spells. To ensure that the Rabi farmers won't suffer in any way, precautions will be taken.
The administration is adamant about carrying out the spillways project in a timely manner, and construction on them would begin at the conclusion of the current season. Inquiries must be made in order to evaluate the stability of important structures. Additionally, the project's status was examined by the State Dam Safety review team, which was led by former Central Water Commission chairman A B Pandya. The panel then gave its suggestions. The report is being considered by the government.
The Kaddam River, which rises in the highlands of the Dedra Reserved Forest in the adilabad district and is one of the oldest projects in the State, is crossed by the reservoir, which is one of the most vulnerable to flash floods. The building began in 1949 and was finished in 1958. The dam burst due to an enormous flood that occurred on august 31, 2058.
Compared to the intended capacity of 2.5 lakh cusecs, the flood flow that was measured was in the range of above 5.19 lakh cusecs. Nine more floodgates were added to the nine already present as part of the reconstruction to boost the spill channel capacity. By increasing the full reservoir level (FRL) from 212.10 meters to 213.30 meters, the gross storage capacity was also enhanced.
Both in 1995 and 2022, flash floods of a similar nature happened in the Kaddam River. Even though the flood flow was above 6 lakh cusecs on both occasions, the project was able to resist the flood's ferocity. The project once again saw record floods on July 27 this year, which led to operational issues with three spillway gates.
The Dam Safety Authority has acted at the request of chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and suggested measures to enhance the project. The officials stated that the project's repair work will start shortly.
