Security was tightened in the data-border areas of tamil Nadu as a precautionary measure in the wake of the bandh called by pro-Kannada activists in karnataka on the issue of Cauvery river water sharing. The tamil Nadu director General of police (DGP) office said in a release on thursday that the officials of krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode, salem and Nilgiri districts which share the data-border with karnataka have been alerted as a precautionary measure. Necessary directions have been issued on the basis of discussions held with officials of the government of karnataka regarding the movement of public buses and trucks. Security has been tightened at all the check posts with additional police personnel under the command of senior officers," he said. According to a senior krishnagiri official, 400 trucks heading to karnataka from tamil Nadu have been halted in areas like Shoolagiri, krishnagiri taluk, Oppadavadi (Baraguru) and Sappanipatti. Private vehicles with tamil Nadu registration numbers were also stopped at the data-border. It said that only vehicles carrying people for emergency purposes are being allowed to cross the data-border after entering the necessary details of the vehicle owners and sharing information about the arrival of such vehicles with the karnataka authorities.
Protests were held in various districts of karnataka including Bengaluru, Mysore, Mandya, Chikkamagaluru on friday against the karnataka government's decision to release Cauvery water to tamil Nadu. karnataka Chief minister Siddaramaiah said the government will move the supreme court on the Cauvery Water Control Committee (CWRC) directive to release 3,000 cusecs of water to tamil Nadu from september 28 to october 15. Amid tensions between the two states, the Cauvery Water Management Authority will meet in Friday.
