The central government has outright rejected any plan to link social media accounts like Facebook, twitter, instagram with Aadhaar or any other identity card issued by the government. minister of State for Information technology rajeev Chandrasekhar said these things in reply to a question asked during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha.

Lok Sabha mp Feroze varun gandhi had asked the Information technology minister whether the central government is considering linking Facebook, twitter or other social media accounts with the identity card issued by the government to validate them? Responding to this question of Feroze varun gandhi in writing, Rajiv chandrasekhar said that there is no such proposal before the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

He said that the anonymous use of social media platforms continues and there is no proposal before the Ministry of Electronics and Information technology to link any person's social media accounts with government-issued identity cards.

When asked about the registered cases related to social media crime and how many such cases have been settled, rajeev Chandrasekhar said that NCRB does not maintain the data base related to social media crime. However, according to NCRB, 85 cybercrime cases were registered in 2019, 149 in 2020 and 123 in 2021 related to fake profiles.

He said that social media platforms which have more than 5 million registered users in india are required to appoint a Grievance Officer, a Chief Compliance Officer and a nodal contact person for 24*7 coordination with law enforcement agencies. He said that the government has set up three GAC (Grievance Appellate Committees) under the IT Rules 2021 for users to appeal, where appeals can be made against the decision of the Grievance Officer of social media.
