He was a great lawyer. Prior to entering politics, he held the positions of Advocate General of maharashtra, Chairman of the State Law Commission, and Honorary Legal Adviser to the Government. Prior to accepting the post of deputy chief minister in 1983, he held the portfolios of Irrigation, Social Welfare, Tribal Welfare, Law, and Justice. His closeness to the gandhi family was well known. In the state government, however, he often had quarrels with chief minister Vasantdada Patil. When he was the deputy chief minister, Ramrao Adik had gone on a tour of germany for an international exhibition. They wanted to go to Hanover, germany for an exhibition.
