The Israel-Hamas war made headlines at the start of the Toronto international Film festival (TIFF). As soon as the opening ceremony began, pro-Palestine protesters started protesting inside the Princess of wales Theatre. This interrupted the speech of the festival CEO cameron Bailey and a call was made to the sponsor Royal Bank of canada (RBC) not to fund Israel's attacks on Gaza.

'Stop the genocide' slogans raised at the event

During the protest, activists raised slogans of 'Stop the genocide'. The venue echoed this slogan for four minutes. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau was also present there when the demonstration began. More than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since israel assaulted Gaza following the october 7 attack by terror group Hamas until last month, CNN reported.

Why did the protests happen?

The protests came as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave an update that the Biden administration is working with qatar and egypt on a new ceasefire proposal to present to israel and Hamas in the next few days, saying 90 percent of the deal has been agreed upon.

The event will continue till september 15

Thursday's TIFF ceremony took place ahead of the opening night screening of David Gordon Green's Nutcrackers, starring Ben Stiller as a workaholic who travels to rural Ohio to look after his recently orphaned nephews. Talking about the Toronto international Film festival (TIFF), is scheduled to continue from september 5 to 15. Over the next 10 days, films such as Ron Howard's survival thriller "Eden," Marielle Heller's horror comedy "Nightbitch" with Amy Adams, the animated "The Wild Robot" starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, and john Crowley's "We Live in Time" will be screened for Canadian audiences.
