Michael Vaughan slams Rohit Sharma for ‘average’ captaincy
Michael Vaughan chastised rohit sharma for not being proactive when captaining india in their first Test against england at the rajiv gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Vaughan described Rohit's captaincy as 'ordinary' and claimed that the indian skipper was bewildered while Ollie Pope was playing sweeps and reverse sweeps at will.
On Saturday, january 28, Ollie Pope scored 196 runs as england defeated the hosts by 28 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Although his attempted reverse-scoop off jasprit bumrah proved to be his undoing, Pope had already caused significant damage by that point.
"I think Rohit Sharma's captaincy was extremely substandard. I believed he was quite reactive; I don't believe he manoeuvred his pitch or was aggressive with his bowling adjustments. "And he had no answer to Ollie Pope's sweeps or reverse sweeps," Vaughan wrote in his Telegraph column.
Vaughan claimed that india should have modified their strategy when Pope and the other english hitters were suffocating their bowlers with ease.
The veteran also said that Rohit could have used more attacking fields and encouraged the english hitters to go over the top.
"The finest spinner I've seen, Shane Warne, would go around the wicket and tell the guy to sweep the leg side and good luck with that. I did not see any of that from India.
"It was simply too simple. England's style of play guarantees that they will always score boundaries. And by broadening the field, Sharma was essentially indicating that his bowlers' finest deliveries would still go for one', he continued.
