Why The Mummy Has Aged Better Than Its Sequel Movies

The Mummy by stephen Sommers has held up exceptionally well since its 1999 premiere, although its two sequels are noticeably more worn. The Mummy centres on the struggles of Rick O'Connell, played by Brendan Fraser, Evelyn Carnahan, played by rachel Weisz, and her brother Jonathan (John Hannah), who unintentionally brought back the terrible Imhotep, the mummy who wields the ten plagues (Arnold Vosloo).

Due to The Mummy's popularity, two follow-up films, The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, as well as The Mummy: The Animated Series and The Scorpion king spin-off series, were produced. Despite the fact that all three Mummy movies were financial successes, The Mummy Returns and Tomb of the Dragon Emperor both have a much worse reputation than the 1999 original.

A few crucial choices and elements help explain why the two sequels have not retained the kind of B-movie love that The Mummy continues to enjoy, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight provided by the two sequels' storytelling choices, technical aspects, and the larger adventures they add to The Mummy franchise's timeline. Naturally, all of them are influenced in some manner by the tone that The Mummy set for the series, as opposed to that of The Mummy Returns and Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
