On November 8, 2016, prime minister Modi announced demonetization and introduced two thousand rupee notes. Subsequently, on 19 May 2023, the Reserve bank announced that two thousand rupee notes would be withdrawn from circulation.From october 9, 2023, RBI issue offices are also accepting Rs 2000 bank notes from individuals and entities for deposit into their bank accounts. Further, members of the public are sending Rs 2000 banknotes through india Post from any post office within the country to any of the RBI issue office
When the decision to withdraw the Rs 2000 note was made on May 19 last year, the total value of Rs 2000 notes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. In this case, the RBI said that at the close of business on June 28, the public still had Rs 7,581 crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes.


RBI said that 97.87 percent of the total value of Rs 2000 notes will be returned to the bank by the end of June. It is noteworthy that at present only 19 offices of the Reserve bank have the facility to exchange 2000 rupee notes.
