Can climate change become the reason for migration?

Most of the people in the world like to live in their own country. There is only one person out of every 30 who leaves his country and settles in another country. In the year 2020, about 281 million people across the world were living in other countries, which is 3.6% of the world's population.

The number of people going to other countries and living in other countries has been continuously increasing for the last 50 years. The figure for 2020 is 12 crore 80 lakh more than that of 1990 and is more than three times the estimate of 1970. To understand the migration of people around the world, the international Organization for Migration (IOM) has released the World Migration Report every year since 2000. The 12th report will come this year in 2024. This report gives statistics and information about people moving from one country to another across the world. Besides, this report also talks in detail on some special issues.

First, understand the meaning of migration

Migration means moving from one country or state to another country or state. people migrate in search of a better life. When people go from one place to another, the place they leave is called Place of Origin and the place they go to is called Place of Destination. people migrate mainly in search of two things – good earnings and a better life.

Who migrates more, men or women?

If we look closely, most of the people living in other countries are men and this difference has increased in the last 20 years. In 2000, male and female migrants were almost equal – 50.6% male (88 million) and 49.4% female (86 million). But by 2020 this figure changed. Now 51.9% (14.6 crore) migrants are men and 48.1% (13.5 crore) are women. That means, in the last 20 years, the number of female migrants has decreased while the number of male migrants has increased by 1.3%.
