Raja ram mohan Roy is counted among those social reformers of India, due to which the condition and direction of women has changed in the country. He played a major role in ending the cruel practice of Sati and due to him, later laws were made on practices like child marriage.


India was ruled by the east India Company and this is between the years 1808-1809. One day raja Ram Mohan Roy was going from Gangaghat to bhagalpur city on a palanquin. At the same time, the collector who went out for a walk on a horse came to the fore. Due to the curtains in the palanquin, Rammohan could not see them and the palanquin passed in front of the collector.

Rammohan saw that there was no effect of humility, so he looked at the collector with a contemptuous look and got him on the palanquin again in front of the collector and went ahead. He also understood that until the indians do not respect themselves with their heart, the british will keep trampling them.

Letter to Lord Minto

After this Rammohan wrote a letter to the governor General Lord Minto on april 12, 1809 and gave complete information about the collector. He wrote that by any british officer, whatever the reason for his displeasure, insulting any indian dignified gentleman in this way is intolerable torture and such misbehavior will be called unbridled autocracy.

When the collector was reprimanded because of raja Ram Mohan Roy

The governor General took his complaint seriously, when the collector termed this complaint as false, then the matter was investigated. After which Lord Minto reprimanded the collector and warned that such disputes should not come to the fore in future.

How has been the life journey of raja Ram Mohan Roy?

Raja ram mohan Roy was born on 22 May 1772 in a bengali Hindu family of Hooghly. Rammohan's father Ramakant Rai was a Vaishnavite and his mother Tarini Devi was of Shaivism. The Mughal emperor Akbar II (1806–1837) gave him the title of Raja. In the year 1815, he founded the Atmiya Sabha in Kolkata. In the year 1828, along with Dwarkanath Tagore, the Brahmo Samaj was founded. From 1818 he started opposing the practice of Sati which was declared illegal by Lord Bentinck.
