World Malaria Day: Malaria-free country!!!


Today is World Malaria Day. Once upon a time, malaria was considered a deadly disease. This mosquito-borne disease was once incurable. In 2020, when 6,27,000 people died of malaria in the whole world. There were 241 million malaria cases reported during this period. The heart-wrenching thing was that during this period more than 6 lakh people died due to malaria in 85 countries, most of which were African children up to the age of 5. Four African countries account for half of the world's malaria deaths. These countries include countries like Nigeria, the Republic of Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Mozambique.


Malaria: Causes and Symptoms

Malaria is actually caused by Plasmodium parasites. Female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit these parasites. Malaria is caused by a total of five types of parasites. Most of these cases are reported in African countries. Symptoms of malaria begin to appear in 10-15 days. Their common symptoms include fever, headache, and chills.


Malaria-free country

Between 2020 and 2022, a total of 12 countries were declared malaria-free by the WHO. All these countries are United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Turkmenistan, Argentina, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Paraguay, Sri Lanka, Algeria, China, and El Salvador. It is to be known that the certificate of malaria-free is given only when there are zero malaria cases in a country for three consecutive years.
