Unlimited 5G, Unlimited Confusion: Are Customers Being Forced Back to Paid Data Packs?

The “Unlimited 5G” Reality Customers Are Furious About

“Unlimited 5G” sounds unbeatable—until your phone quietly starts eating into your regular data allowance. That is precisely the complaint increasingly raised by some Airtel and Jio users, who say that despite being in areas with 5G connectivity, their 4G data quota continues to be consumed. And when that quota hits zero, the supposed freedom of unlimited 5G can suddenly turn into another recharge bill.

  1. The biggest frustration is the gap between the promise and the experience. Telecom operators have aggressively promoted 5G plans with unlimited-data benefits, encouraging customers to pay for higher-priced recharges. But customers argue that simply displaying a 5G icon does not always translate into uninterrupted access to 5G data.

  2. Then comes the painful part: the extra recharge. Once a customer's regular data allocation is exhausted, they may have to purchase an additional data pack to stay online, creating the perception that “unlimited” comes with a very expensive asterisk.

  3. Prices have already climbed. With tariff increases making mobile connectivity more expensive, consumers naturally expect the benefits advertised with premium plans to work consistently and transparently.

  4. And where is the accountability? If customers are genuinely being charged against their regular data allowance while supposedly using eligible 5G service, telecom regulators should demand clear answers. However, claims that government silence is directly linked to political funding require evidence and should not be presented as fact.

The real issue is simple: if 5G is advertised as unlimited, customers deserve crystal-clear conditions—and a service that actually behaves like unlimited 5G.
