Nitin Gadkari, the minister of Road Transport and Highways, is advocating for a reduction in GST on hybrid vehicles as part of his ambitious goal to eliminate 36 crore petrol and diesel vehicles from India. Gadkari firmly believes that achieving this objective is entirely feasible, despite the challenges involved.

In an interview with PTI, he emphadata-sized the potential benefits, highlighting the annual savings of Rs 16 lakh crore on fuel imports. According to Gadkari, redirecting these funds could significantly improve the lives of farmers, boost rural prosperity, and generate employment opportunities for the youth. However, he refrained from specifying a timeline for the complete phase-out of petrol and diesel cars.

One of Gadkari's proposals involves reducing GST on hybrid vehicles to 5%, while another suggests a decrease to 12% for flex engines. These proposals have been forwarded to the Finance Ministry for consideration. Gadkari also underscored the importance of promoting biofuels to curb fuel imports.

Having advocated for alternative fuels since 2004, Gadkari remains optimistic about witnessing substantial progress within the next 5 to 7 years. While he acknowledges the difficulty of pinpointing an exact timeframe for this transition, he remains steadfast in his conviction that it is indeed achievable.

As india continues to explore greener transportation options, Gadkari's vision aims to not only reduce dependency on fossil fuels but also usher in a new era of sustainable mobility.
