In a significant political development in tamil Nadu, former AIADMK mla and known O. Panneerselvam (OPS) loyalist Subburathinam has officially joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). His induction into the ruling party is being seen as another setback for the already fragmented All india Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Subburathinam, who had served as an mla during the AIADMK regime, was considered a close supporter of former chief minister O. Panneerselvam. Following the internal power struggle within the AIADMK after the demise of J. Jayalalithaa, he stood firmly with the OPS camp, especially during the party’s prolonged leadership crisis involving Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS).

However, with OPS gradually losing organisational influence and political relevance within the AIADMK, several of his supporters have begun exploring alternative political paths. Subburathinam’s move to the DMK reflects this broader trend of leaders migrating away from the opposition party amid uncertainty and internal discord.

Welcoming Subburathinam into the party, senior DMK leaders highlighted his political experience and grassroots connect, stating that his entry would strengthen the party’s presence at the regional level. The DMK also reiterated its commitment to inclusive governance and welfare-oriented policies, which it said had attracted leaders from various political backgrounds.

Political observers believe that Subburathinam’s switch could have localised electoral implications, particularly in constituencies where he maintains influence. At the same time, it underscores the DMK’s continued success in expanding its political base while the AIADMK struggles to project unity ahead of upcoming elections.

The development adds to a growing list of former AIADMK leaders who have crossed over to the DMK in recent years, reinforcing the perception that the ruling party remains the dominant force in tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
