The Lord Murugan temple at Thiruparankundram, close to madurai, was tense tuesday when members of the right-wing Hindu Munnani group protested over a few Muslim organizations' demand that the hilltop, which also houses a dargah, be renamed Sikkandar Malai.
The protest happened after some individuals, allegedly from the Muslim community, ate meat at the hillock, which is thought to be one of the residences of Lord Murugan, the tamil god, in spite of the madurai District administration's prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS.
The Hindu Munnani knocked on the doors of the madurai Bench of the madras High Court, asking for permission to agitate as police detained the demonstrators. Nonetheless, members of the Hindu Munnani were permitted to stage the demonstration near Palanganatham crossroads, which is around five kilometers from the temple grounds, by Justices G Jayachandran and R Poornima.
Although the courts agreed to permit peaceful protests, they noted that the police might have managed the event more effectively. Additionally, they mandated that no insulting or aggressive chants be used and decided that the petitioners would be held accountable if the demonstrators disobeyed the regulations.
People of both religions have been living side by side and praying at their own houses of worship at Thiruparankundram, which is on the outskirts of Madurai. However, the present controversy started two weeks ago when pictures purportedly showing individuals eating meat appeared, which sparked a lot of outrage among Lord Murugan's followers.
The photo also sparked a heated argument between tamil Nadu bjp president K annamalai and Ramanathapuram lok sabha mp Nawaz Kani, who accused the former of being the leader of the group that ate meat in the hills.
The government allegedly issued prohibitory orders "across the state" on tuesday to stop people from traveling to Thiruparankundram to show support for the demonstrators, according to Annamalai.
Residents of Thiruparankundram have stated that the dispute was needless and that they have been living in harmony for decades while the Muslim groups and right-wing organizations battle it out.
