Why did former british PM Liz Truss say this?

Former british prime minister Elizabeth Truss on saturday (16 november 2024) stressed the need for major reforms in the United Kingdom, including resolving the issues of the country's powerful bureaucracy and promoting a movement like the 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) campaign in the US. At the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, Truss said, "To be honest, I think we need a british Trump. The question is who that person can be." She stressed the need to reduce bureaucratic restrictions on trade deals, especially with india and the US. She said that bureaucracy related to european rules is holding britain back.

She said, "So, I'm interested in knowing how we can create a campaign, like MAGA or the Tea party movement in the US, that can bring about significant change." However, when asked if she would take up such a position, she laughed and replied, "I have already put my fingers in the fire and been badly burnt."

India's role in global geopolitics

Truss referred to India's growing importance on the global stage and described it as "the world's largest democracy" and "a major leadership role in future geopolitics". She emphasised on strengthening India-UK relations and expressed hope that the two countries would agree on a free trade agreement.

"It is an equal partnership. Both sides will have to make compromises to get the deal done, but the opportunities in the areas of technology, defence and agriculture are huge," she said. She also praised India's role in the Quad alliance set up by the US, UK, japan and india to counter the growing influence of China.

Praises Modi and India's economic reforms

Commenting on prime minister Narendra Modi's historic third term, Truss called it a "huge achievement", especially in a global environment where it is becoming difficult for incumbent governments to remain in power. "It is symbolic of the economic reforms that are taking place in india, and it shows that people believe the country is moving in the right direction," she said.
