Vidya Balan Pays Tribute to M.S. Subbulakshmi's Iconic Kanjeevaram Sarees on Her 108th Birth Anniversary
On what would have been the 108th birthday of Bharat Ratna awardee M.S. Subbulakshmi, fans across social media remembered the legendary singer and her lasting impact. Among those honoring her memory was actress vidya balan, who paid a special tribute to Subbulakshmi by emulating her iconic style.
On Instagram, vidya balan shared a heartfelt tribute by dressing up in a series of sarees that M.S. Subbulakshmi wore during the 1960s and 1980s. In a touching post, she wrote, “This is a humble homage by @anuparthasarathy & me to the legend M.S. Subbulakshmi – The Original Style Icon, who carried off an appearance that was both simple and captivating, complementing her divine voice. This feature highlights four sarees that M.S. Amma wore and popularized between the '60s and '80s, reflecting her concert persona.”
The tribute included four distinctive looks: a purple and orange Kanjeevaram saree, a blue and red Kanjeevaram saree, a blue and yellow saree, and a blue saree with golden piping details. vidya balan completed each look with traditional kumkum and vibhuti on her forehead, two nose pins, and jasmine flowers adorning her hair, styled in a bun.
This homage was crafted by costume designer Anu Parthasarthy, who collaborated with Balan after she expressed her desire to celebrate M.S. Subbulakshmi's legacy through this meaningful tribute.
