What controversy over river linking scheme in Bihar?
people living on the banks of the Kosi river data-face a major problem of floods and land erosion every year. This destroys their houses and ruins their crops. In this project, only irrigation has been focused on, which is not able to solve the immediate and recurring problem of floods. Even though the government says that this scheme will reduce the problem of floods, it is not so. Very little water will be released through this scheme, which will not solve the problem of floods. Under this project, only 5247 cubic feet per second (cusecs) more water will be released from the dam, which is very less compared to the total capacity of the dam of 900,000 cusecs. Therefore, local people say that such little water will not be able to stop the floods that come every year.
When will the 'sorrow of Bihar' end?
The Kosi river keeps changing its direction continuously. Its flow is extremely fast and it often breaks its banks and creates new channels, causing severe floods that affect many districts of Bihar. Floods cause large-scale waterlogging, which damages crops, damages houses and renders people homeless. The fast flow of the river also causes soil erosion, leaving agricultural land barren.
Solving the problems of the Kosi river is a big challenge. Due to the constantly changing course of the river, it is difficult to implement any permanent solution. It is difficult to give an exact answer as to when the Kosi river 'Bihar ka Shaurya' will end. It is difficult to find a permanent solution to the problem of the Kosi river. But this problem can definitely be solved with the joint efforts of the government, the international community and the people.
