Telangana - Will BRS regain its foothold after LS Election Debacle?

SIBY JEYYA
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) will now concentrate on strengthening its grassroots organizational strength to be prepared for the local body elections, which are scheduled to take place this year, now that the dust has cleared after the lok sabha elections. The BRS data-faces an existential danger or the possibility of being sidelined as a minor third actor in the state's politics due to the increasing threat of the bharatiya janata party (BJP) eating into its territory in the lok sabha polls.

The BRS, led by the former chief minister of telangana, k chandrasekhar rao (KCR), will not hold power for the first time since 2014. Rebuilding the party's organizational strength will be necessary if it hopes to challenge the current congress administration since the party has already seen several of its legislators—both MPs and MLAs—defect to the congress before to the 2024 lok sabha elections.

The BRS was anticipating a landslide after winning 88 of 119 assembly seats in the 2018 state elections, therefore it was disappointed to only win nine out of 17 lok sabha seats in 2019. Nevertheless, despite the loss, the BRS prevailed, taking over 100 out of the 139 municipalities and businesses that had elections in january 2020. In terms of the wards that the BRS won then as well, both the bjp and the congress lagged well behind.

The congress secured 64 out of 119 seats in the telangana assembly elections of 2023, while the BRS secured 39 seats. In Hyderabad, the congress party of india (CPI) won one seat, the bjp took home seven, and the india Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) held onto their seven seats. Five months later, the BRS performed poorly in the lok sabha elections, losing eight seats to the Congress.

"We need to strengthen our structure and follow the Congress's lead when it was in opposition. As needed, we will address other topics and highlight concerns. Additional MLAs may depart in the next few days, but that won't affect us. When approached, a BRS leader stated, "We have to wait and see how things work out.

Even though the bjp received 35% of the vote in the lok sabha elections, Telangana's grassroots and local leaders are still absent from the party. Its most recent location inside the state, nevertheless, may aid in capitalization and base building. Political commentators believe that the BRS will eventually lose ground to the bjp and become sidelined as a third actor if it does nothing to control the situation.

The one significant benefit is that kcr spearheaded the movement for statehood, and the BRS is closely associated with telangana feeling. The congress wants to get rid of this, but it was too recent, so it will be difficult. We must so observe, that kcr cannot be written off with ease. He is among India's most intelligent politicians. We will be able to gauge the direction of affairs through the local body votes, according to a political expert who wished to remain anonymous.
