World Environment Day is celebrated globally on june 5th each year to raise and maintain awareness of environmental action. By embracing eco-friendly behaviors, preserving resources, and forming sustainable habits, we can all work together to change the world. Every little move counts, whether it's eliminating waste, planting trees, or promoting renewable energy.

The main organization organizing this festival is the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). World Environment Day encourages people to take action by addressing environmental issues and creating a feeling of urgency for a sustainable future through campaigns, events, and projects.

The World Environment Day's history

During the 1972 Stockholm Conference, the UN General assembly proclaimed june 5 to be World Environment Day. It was the first global conference where a substantial focus was placed on environmental conservation. In the same year, the UNEP was founded. The inaugural World Environment Day was observed in 1973.'Only One Earth' served as the theme for the inaugural World Environment Day celebration in 1973.

As of right now, 193 member states of the UNEP celebrate this day with a variety of events.

World Environment Day's theme

This year, "Land Restoration, Desertification, and drought Resilience" is the theme of World Environment Day.Half of the world's population is directly impacted by up to 40% of the planet's land being degraded, according to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. According to the official United Nations website, "Droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050 if urgent action is not taken." The frequency and duration of droughts have increased by 29% since 2000. As the worldwide host for World Environment Day in 2024, the Kingdom of saudi arabia is reiterating its commitment to upholding the objectives of Vision 2030 by promoting sustainable development and environmental protection.
