The accident took place today (May 01, Wednesday) around 2.10 pm. A 17.9 meter (58 ft) section of the Meilong Expressway has reportedly collapsed. At that time, 18 cars traveling on the road got stuck in the slope and fell down, the authorities of Meizhou city of Guangdong province reported this information. The accident took place after midnight around 2 am.

After the highway collapsed, a massive gas pipeline leaked into the mountains below, sparking fires in many places. There are reports that the whole area looks like a sugar cane. About 500 personnel have been deployed at the spot for relief and rescue operations. 19 people were initially reported dead. Now this number has increased to 24. 30 people are injured. Officials said around 20 vehicles were damaged due to the broken parts of the road. Many cars were also burnt.

The rains in the province caused losses of about 140.6 million yuan (Chinese currency) or $19.4 million. A factory in the provincial capital Guangzhoualso collapsed. 5 people died in this. 33 people have been hospitalized.
