Telangana Hyderabad - Maha Lakshmi rush strains TSRTC, commuters alike

The telangana State Road Transport Corporation finds itself in a difficult predicament. The occupancy ratio has gone higher, yet there aren't enough buses to accommodate everyone. Because of the "Maha Lakshmi" initiative, which has increased passenger flow, most buses are full, and in several recent cases, ladies and students have been observed risking their lives to board them.

RTC officials assert that occupancy ratios—which were reported at 114.28 percent and 108.38 percent in february of this year—have surpassed 100 percent. Before, the occupancy ratios in each of the depots varied from 50% to 70%.

The absence of sufficient buses is a key factor in why the RTC's services have not improved despite this apparent success in increasing ridership. Even with the occasional introduction of new buses—luxury, express, and electric—the supply cannot keep up with the growing demand.

Approximately 5,000 of the 9,200 buses in the RTC—including hiring buses—are reportedly elderly and prone to breaking down.

The buses have suffered damage frequently as a result of their higher capacity and weighty load. Buses that traveled more than 8 lakh kilometers were formerly retired, but they are still in service now even after they reach 14 lakh or 15 lakh kilometers.

According to TSRTC Managing director VC Sajjanar, the process of purchasing new buses will not end. We have added several brand-new buses to the fleet in the previous several months. It is a continuous procedure. Our goal is to acquire 2,500 more buses, including electric vehicles," he declared.
