CNN stated that Chinese President Xi jinping told his American counterpart Joe Biden that china will not intervene in the 2024 US presidential election, citing individuals familiar with the conversation. Chan's Foreign minister later confirmed the vow to the US National Security Adviser during a recent meeting in Thailand.
Xi's first commitment came at a high-stakes bilateral in california last year, with the goal of defusing the heightened military and economic tensions between the US and China. Biden broached the matter of electoral tampering, which Xi addressed in a "brief" conversation.
The problem arose this weekend at a more than 12-hour meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, between US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign minister Wang Yi. Wang underlined Xi's vow, stressing that beijing will not interfere with the US presidential elections later this year. Foreign influence in US elections remains a major worry for American politicians, particularly in light of Russia's involvement in the 2016 election. While china has traditionally used fewer direct measures, concerns about its cyber capabilities and new intelligence assessments remain.
While analysts believe china has historically been less overt in its influence attempts than other countries, there is persistent worry about its cyber capabilities and potential for meddling. Chinese hackers have already breached important US infrastructure, raising concerns about potential disruptions to essential services or military preparedness.
According to intelligence sources, Chinese operatives are using more aggressive approaches to target US voters and politicians. Since 2020, senior Chinese officials have issued directions calling for intensified attempts to impact US policy and public mood, including the use of phoney social media profiles to attack American leaders.
