Israel started a new attack on Gaza City, the largest city in the Palestinian territory, on monday (local time), while Hamas reacted by firing a barrage of rockets onto central israel, with no injuries reported.
The latest attacks came a day after the US vowed to "take necessary actions" in response to the deaths of three American service members in a drone strike in Jordan, which were the first US military fatalities since the war between israel and Hamas began on october 7 last year, according to Reuters.
According to residents, airstrikes on communities throughout Gaza City killed and injured several people. According to residents, Israeli tanks shot at eastern regions, while navy boats pounded beachside locations in the west. Authorities did not release any official figures on how many people were killed or injured in the Israeli airstrikes.
• Last year, israel announced that it had essentially concluded operations in Gaza City and northern Gaza and was attacking different Hamas sites in southern Gaza. The renewed assault on Gaza City, where residents reported violent fire fighting near Al-Shifa Hospital, occurred amid Middle Eastern tensions and fears of a full-fledged conflict.
• In central israel, where there has been relative tranquilly over the previous few days, missile sirens were sounded in major cities, leading many to flee for safety, Reuters said. According to the Israeli military, Hamas fired 15 missiles from Gaza, which it controls, with six of them being shot down.
• According to an Israeli intelligence dossier seen by Reuters, around 190 workers of UNRWA, the UN agency in charge of Palestinian aid operations since the conflict began, also worked for Hamas or Islamic Jihad terrorist groups. The paper includes the names and photos of 11 of these individuals.
According to the dossier, these staff members collaborated with Hamas in the october 7 attacks against israel, including the kidnapping and killing of civilians, claims that Palestinians have denied. The UN has not yet gotten a copy of the dossier, according to spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Monday.
• Following the deaths of three US military personnel in a drone assault in northeast Jordan, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin stated on monday that the Joe Biden administration will take "necessary actions" to safeguard the country and its troops. On the other side, white house National Security spokesperson john Kirby stated that the US does not seek a "wider war" with iran or anybody else in the Middle East.
Iran has denied any involvement in the drone strike in Jordan, while the US has accused Iran-backed forces for the attack but has refrained from publicly striking Tehran.
