South Korea stampede: What went wrong at Seoul Halloween event
What happened?
Since the pandemic reached South Korean soil, this is the first Halloween without a mask. As a result, there was more traffic than was anticipated in the congested lanes near the Hamilton Hotel. According to the BBC, there were about 100,000 Halloween revellers in the neighbourhood. social media users reported that the Itaewon neighbourhood felt unsafe because of the crowds before the disaster. The street was littered with scores of dead that had been covered in blue blankets.
According to Al Jazeera, the incident happened as a sizable crowd surged toward a club after learning that a celebrity was inside. Who the celebrity was is unknown. 400 emergency personnel have been sent by the government to deal with the crisis. According to the Korean Herald, President Yoon Suk-yeol stated after hearing about the tragedy that "all associated ministries and agencies, led by the minister of public administration and security, should make every effort to immediately provide relief to the victims."
