Hyderabad's Musi river in spate, two bridges shut

G GOWTHAM
On wednesday, two bridges in hyderabad that span the musi river were blocked to vehicular traffic because of flooding. The traffic police stopped the Moosarambagh causeway and the Chaderghat old bridge due to the Musi being in spate as a result of strong inflows from upstream and the release of flood water from twin reservoirs nearby.

Due to the traffic police's construction of barricades on both sides of the bridges, Chaderghat, malakpet, Moosarambagh, and other districts experienced severe traffic congestion. The flow of vehicles between Chaderghat and malakpet was severely hampered, and traffic between Amberpet and malakpet came to a complete stop. The river was running over the normally busy bridges, completely flooding them. Additionally, residential areas near riverbanks were flooded. The afflicted individuals were relocated to relief camps by the greater hyderabad municipal corporation (GHMC).

Since Tuesday, the river that flows through the city has been overflowing as a result of large floods brought on by severe rainfall in the upstream and catchment areas. Heavy rains in Vikarabad and Chevella continued to cause large inflows into the twin reservoirs Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. At Osman Sagar (Gandipet), the inflows increased to 8,000 cusecs. To release 8,281 cusecs of water into the musi river, the hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has opened 13 gates that are up to six feet tall. On wednesday morning, Gandipet's water level was 1,789.10 feet higher than the FTL of 1,790 feet.
