She was born on 24 february 1948, the daughter of Jayaram-Vedavalli couple, who lived in Melkottai, Pandavapura taluka in the Mandya district of the then mysore princely state (now Karnataka). jayalalithaa studied at the Church Park Convent in chennai from 1958 to 1968.
On her way to college, she made her acting debut in the tamil film White Dress directed by Sridhar.
