Government Updates Duty-Free Allowances for Electronics and Personal Items

New Delhi:
The Indian government has updated customs regulations for international travellers, specifying duty-free limits for electronic items such as iPhones, laptops, and other personal goods. The move aims to streamline customs procedures and clarify how much travelers can carry without paying additional duties.

Duty-Free Allowances for Electronics

Under the new rules:

  • Smartphones (e.g., iPhones, Android devices): Travellers can bring up to 1 device duty-free per person. Additional devices may attract customs duty.
  • Laptops and tablets: One laptop or tablet per adult is allowed without paying customs duty. Bringing more may require declaration and payment of applicable taxes.
  • Other personal electronics: Accessories like smartwatches, headphones, and cameras have specified limits, typically one unit per category, duty-free.
Baggage Rules for Travellers

The rules also clarify weight and value limits for baggage:

  • Adults (above 18 years): Goods worth up to 50,000 (for air travel) or 25,000 (for land/sea travel) can be brought duty-free.
  • Minors (below 18 years): Duty-free allowance is 15,000.
Duty on Excess Items

Travellers carrying items above the permitted limits must declare them at customs. Duty rates vary depending on the product category, with electronics like phones and laptops attracting specific duty percentages. Failure to declare can lead to penalties or confiscation.

Tips for international Travellers

  • Keep receipts handy for all electronics and valuable goods.
  • Declare all items exceeding duty-free limits to avoid legal issues.
  • Check airline and travel regulations for baggage weight restrictions.
Government’s Aim

Customs authorities aim to simplify international travel while preventing tax evasion and ensuring compliance with import rules. These updates help travellers plan purchases and manage allowances efficiently when entering India.
