1. Thai Pongal

2. Mattu Pongal

  • Purpose: This day is dedicated to honoring and celebrating cattle, especially bulls and cows, which are vital for farming in rural tamil Nadu.
  • Rituals:
    • Cattle are bathed, decorated with turmeric, kumkum, garlands, and bells.
    • Farmers offer pongal (sweet rice dish) to the cows and bulls as a token of gratitude.
    • Jallikattu, the traditional bull-taming sport, is often held in villages like Alanganallur in madurai district.
  • Focus: Mattu pongal emphadata-sizes the human-animal bond, respect for livestock, and the role of animals in agriculture.
