Controversy Erupts Over tamil Nadu Restaurant Owner's GST Apology to Sitharaman,
A viral video showing a tamil Nadu restaurant owner apologizing to Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman during a private conversation has sparked controversy. The video, shared by the BJP’s tamil Nadu social media cell state convenor, has data-faced criticism from the Opposition.
The incident occurred after Srinivasan, the owner of Sri Annapoorna restaurant, voiced concerns about the Goods and services Tax (GST) on food items during a meeting with Sitharaman in Coimbatore. Srinivasan pointed out that while cream-filled buns were taxed at 18%, individual buns were not taxed. He noted that customers often requested plain buns to add their own cream and jam to avoid the higher tax.
Later, in a private conversation, Srinivasan, who is also the chairperson of the tamil Nadu Hotel Owners Federation, apologized to Sitharaman for addressing the issue publicly in the presence of bjp mla Vanathi Srinivasan. The video of the apology drew significant attention online, leading to criticism from the congress and the DMK, which accused the bjp of violating the restaurant owner's privacy and displaying "arrogance and outright disrespect." They also claimed that Vanathi Srinivasan had pressured the owner into making the apology.
Vanathi Denies Coercion
On Friday, Vanathi Srinivasan denied any coercion, stating that the restaurant owner had expressed regret and requested a chance to apologize to the Finance Minister. She explained that she had facilitated a meeting between Srinivasan and Sitharaman following the owner's request.
BJP tamil Nadu Chief Issues Apology
In response to the backlash, tamil Nadu bjp chief K annamalai issued an apology on behalf of the party members who shared the video. On X , annamalai wrote, “On behalf of @BJP4TamilNadu, I sincerely apologize for the actions of our functionaries who shared a private conversation between a respected business owner and our Hon. FM. He added, “Annapoorna Srinivasan Anna is a pillar of tamil Nadu’s business community, significantly contributing to the state’s and nation’s economic growth. I request everyone to respect the matter and move on.”
