WhatsApp Calling vs Ringing – What’s the Difference?

Balasahana Suresh
When you use whatsapp to connect with someone via voice or video, you might notice different terms appear: “Calling” and “Ringing.” These aren’t just random words—they indicate specific stages of your call.

1. Calling

· When you press the call button (voice or video) on whatsapp, you’ll see “Calling” on your screen.

· What it means: Your device is sending a call request to the recipient, but it hasn’t reached them yet or they haven’t answered.

· Think of it as the “dialing” stage on a regular phone. The app is trying to establish a connection.

2. Ringing

· Once whatsapp successfully reaches the other person’s device, you’ll see “Ringing.”

· What it means: Their phone or whatsapp is actively alerting them that you’re calling. The recipient can now accept or reject the call.

· This stage is similar to your friend’s phone physically ringing in a normal call.

Why the distinction matters

· “Calling” → The connection hasn’t reached the other person yet (network delays, poor internet, or the person’s phone being offline).

· “Ringing” → The recipient’s device is notified and awaiting a response.

Other Notes

· If a whatsapp call stays on “Calling” for a long time, it usually means the recipient is offline, has no internet, or the call couldn’t connect.

· If it goes to “Ringing” but no one answers, it eventually stops—similar to a regular phone call being ignored.

Quick analogy:

· Calling = dialing the number and waiting for the other side to get notified.

· Ringing = the phone is literally ringing on the other side, ready for the person to pick up.
