The government believes that such a provision will see a reduction in cybercrime. Sub-section 4 of Section 7 of the Telecom Bill states that customers will have to disclose their true identity at all times. False identification or concealment of identity shall be punishable with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to Rs 50,000, or with both.


The draft bill also states that in such a case, the police can arrest you without a warrant and initiate an investigation without a court order. Telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnav had also recently said that the government is seriously looking into the issue of online financial frauds and has made it mandatory that going forward, even users of OTT platforms like WhatsApp-Signal, have to do KYC formalities. will have to be completed. He said that the telecom bill will be implemented in 6-10 months.
