According to Hindu mythology, Dev deepawali marks the day when the gods descended to Earth to celebrate Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura. This victory symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.It is believed that on this day, the divine beings visit Kashi (Varanasi) to offer lamps to Lord shiva and the ganga river. Hence, devotees light millions of diyas (earthen lamps) along the ghats — transforming varanasi into a radiant “city of lights” that even the heavens envy.🌊 Grand Rituals on the Ghats of Kashi
The celebrations begin at dawn with a holy Ganga Snan (bath in the river), believed to cleanse sins and grant divine blessings.By evening, all 84 ghats of Varanasi, including Dashashwamedh, Assi, and rajendra prasad Ghat, glow with over a million diyas.
Devotees chant hymns, perform Aarti, and offer flowers and lamps to Mother Ganga. The Ganga Aarti on Dev deepawali is particularly mesmerizing — a spectacle of synchronized bells, fire lamps, and chants filling the night air.
