'No' to Cardamom in Aravani Payasam in Sabarimala..!?
Cardamom will no longer be added to the aravana payasam prepared at the sabarimala Ayyappan Temple, the Travancore Devasam Port said. It is noteworthy that the kerala high court had said that the addition of cardamom in Aravani Payasam may harm the health of the devotees.

Travancore Devasam Port Chairman P.S. While meeting the media, Prashanth said, “Cardamom will no longer be added to the Aravanai Payasam served to the devotees at the sabarimala Ayyappan temple. No complaints have been received about Aravani Payasam being prepared in that style for the last one year. Due to this, no more cardamom is collected in Aravani Payasam. Also, some are complaining that cumin contains disinfectant. After getting the research report on that, if necessary, adding cumin to Aravani Payasam will be avoided,” he said.
Aravana Payasam is being sold to devotees at sabarimala Ayyappan Temple. 200 batches of payasam are prepared and sold per day. In this, rice, sugar, fruit, and ghee are added more, and ingredients like cardamom and cumin are also added. It is very popular among sabarimala devotees. In this case, there were complaints that the cardamom used in payasam was of poor quality and was dangerous because of the presence of pesticides in it.
Following the complaints, the Food Safety and Standards Commission of india inspected the cardamom used in payasam as ordered by the kerala High Court. According to the report, 14 deadly pesticides were found in the cardamom sample. It has been mentioned that cardamom contains some pesticides which can cause serious diseases and injuries. Following these reports, the high court ordered the Devasthanam Board not to distribute payasam containing pesticide-laced seeds.
High court Order:
The kerala high court, which heard the case in this regard, said that by adding cardamom to the devotees who consume Aravani Payasam, there may be harm to their health, and it warned on january 12, pointing out the amount of pesticides in it. It also banned its use. But on appeal, the supreme court ruled that they were edible. However, Devasam Port, which avoided cardamom in Aravani Payasam, has announced that it will no longer use cardamom.
