According to the latest Domestic Consumer Expenditure survey (Household Consumption Expenditure survey 2022-23) conducted by the government of India, indians spend the most on milk, surpassing expenses on grains, fruits, vegetables, and meat. This trend is observed both in urban and rural areas.

In rural areas, the survey reveals that people spend Rs 314 per month on milk, while Rs 203 is spent on vegetables, Rs 185 on grains, and Rs 185 on eggs, fish, and meat. Additionally, Rs 140 is spent on fruits, Rs 136 on edible oil, Rs 113 on spices, and Rs 76 on pulses.


In urban areas, the highest monthly expenditure is Rs 466 on milk, followed by Rs 246 on fruits, Rs 245 on vegetables, Rs 235 on grains, and Rs 231 on eggs, fish, and meat. Further, people in urban areas spend Rs 153 on edible oil, Rs 138 on spices, and Rs 90 on pulses.


Experts attribute the increasing consumption of milk to the perception of it as a superfood. indians recognize the nutritional value of milk, leading to a surge in consumption over the years. Milk is considered rich in essential nutrients, contributing to better health and aiding in the fight against malnutrition and other diseases.


Despite a rise in milk prices from Rs 42 to Rs 60 per liter in the last five years, the consumption of milk has not decreased. The report indicates that milk consumption continues to increase, highlighting its significance in the overall health index of India.


The top states contributing to India's total milk production are:


1. Rajasthan: 15.05%

2. Uttar Pradesh: 14.93%

3. Madhya Pradesh: 8.6%

4. Gujarat: 7.56%

5. Andhra Pradesh: 6.97%
