The tamil Nadu government has expanded its network of sub‑health centres, bringing the total to 9,355 across the state, health minister Ma. Subramanian said during a session of the tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Growth and Background

  • When the current government took office, there were 8,713 sub‑health centres in the state.
  • Since then, 642 new sub‑health centres have been opened, increasing overall access to healthcare at the grassroots level.
Infrastructure Breakdown

Of the 9,355 centres currently operating:

  • 6,498 are housed in their own buildings,
  • 1,214 function in rented premises, and
  • 1,643 operate in facilities that are not rented or owned but provided for the purpose.
In addition, construction has begun on 893 new buildings specifically for sub‑health centres, and 680 buildings are nearing completion, the minister added.

Healthcare Staffing Updates

During the same assembly session, minister Subramanian also noted progress in filling vacant positions, especially for village health nurses (Village health Nurse appointments). Over 2,600 nurses were appointed previously, and in recent weeks more than 3,000 additional nurses have been recruited, creating a situation where there are no vacancies for village health nurses for the first time.
