Various organizations including Dharm yatra Mahasangh, Punyadayi Abhiyan Seva Samiti, Agrasen Ghat Samiti distributed prasad of Khichdi on a large scale at many places here. Despite the severe cold, devotees started gathering at Har Ki Pauri even before dawn. Devotees said that even though it was very cold, they could not miss the opportunity to take a bath in the ganges on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
On this occasion, while explaining the religious importance of bathing in the ganges, astrologer Pratik Mishrapuri said that the festival of makar sankranti is celebrated when the sun enters Capricorn, the home of his son Shani. It is called makar sankranti due to this transformative position of the planets. He said that it is believed that bathing in the ganges and donating on this occasion liberates one from all sins and attains salvation. The Senior Superintendent of police said that the administration has made strict security arrangements and the area around the holy river has been divided into eight zones and 21 sectors for crowd management. police have also been deployed at the ghats.
